A social network as we know, is a place where people gather to interact and relate with each other.
Globalization in the world today has also reached Nigeria with social networking being one of it's commonest feature.
Back in 2000, no one owned a mobile phone in Nigeria. Only the rich and the elite could afford telephone land lines then. You have to go to the post office to make calls to your loved ones at towering prices and you have to wait at your rich neighbour's house to recieve that call from someone.
But today, looking at how far we have improved so far, Nigerians now communicate without much sweat. We make calls through our mobile phones and socialize on Facebook, Twitter and lately 2go.
Celebrities are visualy nearer to their fans, and possibly everyone can update messages to his/her followers, friends or loved ones.
Social networks help spread news, rumors and gossip like wildfire because everyone is connected: the teenagers, adults, children and even OLD PEOPLE.
Social networking is easy and affordable. By affordable I mean that one does not require much to socialize. A GPRS enabled phone is all that is needed while a computer is regarded as luxury.
So while we enjoy the social network trend, we ought to be more careful on the personal information we give out; the manner we are addicted with social networking and of course the negative things we do on social networks(Yahoo Yahoo, 419 scams, exessive spamming, 'Free browsing' tricks and cheats, etc.).
Talking about addiction, it was in the news last week that a road accident occured in Onitsha. The victim of the accident was a school boy. Reports said he was 2going mindlessly on his the way back home when he was hit by a runaway motocyclist. Fortunately, the boy suffered only minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital the following day.
This is just one of the negativities of social networking in Nigeria caused by addiction.
