Football is very entertaining and competitive but there could be nothing exciting in it than supporting a top football club in Europe - so does African football fans think.
Football clubs like Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester United., Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, Inter, Ac Milan, Baryern Munich and lately, Manchester City, have large fan bases in Africa even though they ply their various trades all the way in Europe.
Like I, for example, is a Chelsea fan and I hardly miss watching Chelsea matches on TV even though I ve never been to Stamford Bridge! (I shall visit there oneday :P). This is the fashion of many Africans today. Many African youths (like myself), enjoy watching the soccer teams they support in Europe than watching their own national teams play! This is because the football in Europe is very standard, competive, exotic and universal compared to what we have in Africa. Take for example, the English Premier League which features many world class international players from all over the world. Many Africans support their favourite clubs in the Premier League and Europe in general because of their nationalists that play for these clubs.
It is argueable that Chelsea and Manchester United respectively have more fans in Africa than any of their European counterparts. And it is widely believed that many Africans love and support Chelsea because of the large number of black players in the Chelsea squad.
But it is never too late for Africa to say never; if only our Goverments could give more attention to football we could bring out the best of African football and make football more lively in Africa. The Goverment should look at the examples set by South America and Europe and focus on developing our club football and other sporting events.
But we must not fail to acknowldge the commitment and progress of these African countries in club footballing:
Egypt,
Tunisia,
Nigeria,
South Africa,
Morroco,
Algeria,
and Angola.
